The varsity girls basketball team defeated their cross town rivals, Belvidere High School, at home in what was a close game all the way to the end on Saturday, December 3rd. The girls basketball team has had a slow start to their season, starting off just 0-6 heading into the game against Belvidere. They were able to put that slow start behind them and turn it up to beat Belvidere 50-41. This was the most points that North has put up all season. Cortlyn Hefty was a big part of that win as she led the team in scoring with 17 points. Not only did she have some clutch buckets, but she also had some big stops on defense late in the game that helped North secure their first win of the season. The biggest factors that led to North’s win was winning the free throws battle and winning the turnovers battle. Both teams had a lot more turnovers than they would have liked, but North was able to capitalize on Belvidere’s turnovers and score on the fast break. Both teams also shot lots of free throws, but North had more of them falling. Forward Samantha Adams gave her thoughts on the teams first win of the season. “It felt really good to finally get a win,” she said. “But we have got to build on that moving forward if we want to turn this season around. We still have a lot of work to do and a lot more games to play.” Regardless of how the season started, it’s always good to beat our cross town rivals and the girls got that done. As Samantha said, they got to move forward and keep playing like that. They have some more big conference games coming up against Jefferson and Auburn.
