Belvidere North’s Girls Cross Country were the state champions of the 2016-2017 season. And they’re hoping for a repeat of what they accomplished during last year’s season.

At the Belvidere Regional this year, the team just barely missed getting a perfect score. The top runners for North were Madison Diercks (‘20) finishing in first place, Gianna Sagona (‘20) finishing in second place, Sabrina Elder (‘18) finishing in fourth place, Sydnie Elder (‘21) finishing in fifth, Mia Rodriguez (‘18) in sixth and Alex Reza (‘20) finishing in fourteenth. The girls took home the regional champions title for the fourth season in a row.

The team is hoping for success at Sectionals, to be able to make it back to state to continue what they started last year and bring back another state championship to Belvidere North.

“I think we all did great at Regionals, everyone ran really well. We also stayed closer as a team in this race. We almost had a clean sweep,” said Diercks.

Even though they may make running look easy, they train hard almost every day. Some of their workouts include: running for 60 minutes with 15 minutes steady, on Friday’s, they have thirty minutes steady and some days they do 400 meters, 1000 meters and 400 meters x 2.

“I think we all had a great race at conference and that we all worked together to take the conference title. I think we will have a great finish to the rest of our season,” said Reza.

At the NIC-10 Conference, the following runners were awarded All-Conference: Diercks as MVP, Sagona, Elder, Elder, Rodriguez and Reza. Olivia Zaluckyj (‘20) was given Honorable Mention. They earned their sixth straight conference title, led by Diercks in first, Sagona in second, Elder in fifth, Elder in seventh, Rodriguez in eight, Reza in tenth and Zaluckyj in twelfth.

The JV team also won the JV NIC-10 Conference. They were led by Kayla McGuire (‘20) in first, Katie Luna (‘20) in second, Natalie Horgan (‘21 ) in third, Caitlin Corso (‘20), in fourth, Chelsey Recendez (‘19 ) in fifth, Anna Hulstedt (‘20) in eighth and Ainsley Dean (‘21) in ninth.
