As predicted, the Belvidere North girls track team took home the NIC-10 title for the second year in a row last Thursday, May 3. In addition to their victory, the team broke a record for the number of points scored at a NIC-10 conference meet with 209 points, followed by Harlem with 127.5 and Hononegah with 91. The JV team also got second place at the meet, the highest place JV has ever received at the conference meet.

In addition to winning conference, the track team also won sectionals for the second year in a row. To qualify for state, people had to get either first or second place, or get a qualifying time based on the IHSA track standards. The state finals will be held at Eastern Illinois University May 18-19.

The meet began with field events and the 4×800 meter relay. JV and Varsity both won. The team of Sabrina Elder (‘18), Kayla McGuire (‘20), Sydnie Elder (‘21), and Madison Diercks (‘20) is looking to qualify for state this year. Last year, the team took first place in the 3A 4×8 state finals.

Just before the 4×100 meter relay was supposed to start, rain poured down and winds began to knock over the team tents. Belvidere and Belvidere North huddled in a tent until officials ordered everyone to go indoors. Coaches and IHSA officials agreed to wait out the storms. If they wouldn’t have waited, the meet could have been rescheduled for Friday, the next day. High jump, long jump, and triple jump were moved to Friday because those areas were slippery. About an hour later, everyone returned outdoors and the meet continued.

As soon as the meet was set back up, the 4×100 meter relay of Ayanna Wallace (‘20), Grace Bundschuh (‘18), Giovanna Lazzerini (‘18), and Kate Oteng-Bediako (‘18) won with a time of 50.46. Gianna Sagona (‘20) also won the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:08, which is a state qualifying time.

Bundschuh (‘18) took first place in the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash in conference, and she was also named MVP for running events. Kate Oteng-Bediako won triple jump and was named MVP for field events.

Haley Dahl (‘19) placed third in the 300 meter hurdles, and was also a part of the 4×400 meter relay team that placed first.

Several others added to the team score as well at conference, making it a huge team success that the coaching staff was very proud of.

“The best part about conference was cheering all of my teammates on throughout their races,” said Natalie Horgan (‘21).

Congratulations to all of these athletes that qualified for state at the sectionals meet:

– Kate Oteng-Bediako (‘18) in Triple Jump and Long Jump

– Sarah Hulstedt (‘20) in Shot Put

– Taylor Ferguson (‘18) in Pole Vault

– Madison Diercks (‘20) in High Jump, 4×800 relay, and 1600 meter run

– Sydnie Elder (‘20) in 4×800 relay

– Gianna Sagona (‘20) in 3200 meter run

– Grace Bundschuh (‘18) in 100 meter dash

– Kayla McGuire (‘20) in 4×800 relay, 400 meter dash, and 4×400 relay

– Sabrina Elder (‘18) in 4×800 relay, 400 meter dash, and 4×400 relay

– Haley Dahl (‘19) in 300 meter hurdles and 4×400 relay
