Matthew Milby of Dixon, Illinois, opened fire on former classmates last Wednesday. No victims were hurt during the attempted shooting, but by no means does that make the event of any less importance.

The 19-year-old who allegedly opened fire in an Illinois high school this week used a gun that had been purchased by his mother, according to Illinois State Police. The weapon was a 9mm semi-automatic rifle that was previously purchased by Milby’s mother in 2012.

Milby fired seven shots near the gymnasium.

Senior Devin Scott said he was in the gym when he heard what sounded like fireworks.

“It was a little unreal,” he told reporters.

The weightlifting coach reportedly then ran into the gym and alerted the students, who were all seated in the bleachers for graduation practice, to run for safety.

“Some started crying as they started running,” Scott said.

The school’s resource officer confronted the suspect before he took off running. He then chased after Milby and that’s when the seven shots Scott heard were fired. The officer returned the favor which hit the gunman.

Milby was hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries and was then released from the hospital on Thursday. Thanks to the heroic officer no one was hurt besides Milby.

Milby was taken to Lee County Jail to await his arraignment. He has been charged with three counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, Dixon police said Wednesday. Bond was set at $2 million.
