Let’s get some stuff out of the way right now: Bohemian Rhapsody is a very flawed movie. A lot of things that happen in real life are glossed over, and timelines are mixed together. The movie also feels very weak at points in terms of acting. Even with all of these criticisms, however, I still enjoyed the movie. I do recommend going to see this movie, but maybe not if you’re unfamiliar with the band (although I don’t know how you would be.)

Bohemian Rhapsody credits Bryan Singer as the director, but a big chunk of the film is actually directed by Dexter Fletcher, who is credited as executive producer. In case you didn’t know already, the film is about the band Queen and tells their story up to their iconic Live Aid performance in 1985. It stars Rami Malek as lead singer Freddie Mercury, who is definitely the best part of this movie. He carries the movie because he does such an excellent job of portraying the character. If you didn’t know about the history of the band previously, this movie does a perfectly okay job of telling its story. While the movie is very entertaining, it feels too clean. There was a lot of creative liberty taken by the writers that I didn’t appreciate, like skipping over an entire album and corresponding world tour. I and a lot of others suspect that the reason for the movie’s cleanliness is interference from Brian May and Roger Taylor, the two remaining members of the band who maybe didn’t want their images damaged.

Overall, Bohemian Rhapsody isn’t perfect, but it’s damn entertaining. It could have been much more than it was, but you’ll have a good time, and you won’t want to stop at all singing along to the soundtrack.
