The girls bowling team didn’t get much of a break over the winter holidays. They competed at the Harlem Invite just two days after Christmas and then had the Belvidere Invite on January 5.

At the Harlem Invite, the girls didn’t score as well as they were hoping to. The shot wasn’t an easy one, and they were going up against some of the best teams in the state including Harlem, Lockport, and Sycamore. North ended the day in 16th place with a 4540. High scorer for the day was Rachel Nelson (‘20) with a six-game series of 1158 and averaging 193 for the day.

“Bowling over a school break is cool to me because when we all come together for a tournament, we just pick right back up again. We pump each other up and stay by each other’s side, and carry it on no matter how tired we are,” said Cailyn Cottman (‘19).

The girls did better at the Belvidere Invite. After the first game of the day, North was in first place, bowling a 901. The second place team was trailing behind by them by a small margin of 30 pins. The girls fell apart a little as other teams figured out the shot and North dropped down to sixth place after the second game. The girls couldn’t seem to get it back going as a team, but they had Nelson carrying them throughout the day. Nelson bowled a 613 before the lunch break and followed it up with a 608 after the lunch break for a series of 1221. She averaged 204 for the day and finished in third place. The team ended the day in 11th place.

At some tournaments, there is a mini survivor tournament. Nelson competed in the survivor at the Belvidere Invite. She was the last bowler standing, so she won. Coach Andrew Jensen also named her MVP of this tournament.

The girls are quickly closing out their season, with Senior Night held on January 11 and only a couple more matches to go before they go to the Hononegah Regional on February 2.
