Nipsey Hussle Dead After Being Shot Near his LA Clothing Store

33-year-old rapper Nipsey Hussle, whose real name is Ermias Asghedom was shot and killed in front of his own clothing store. Hussle was shot multiple times in the parking lot of his store, Marathon Clothing, in South Los Angeles at about 3:25 p.m. Hussle was hit five times in the torso and once in the head. He was then transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m.

Eric Holder, a 29-year-old-man who Hussle disputed with earlier in the day, was arrested and charged with murder on April 2, 2019. Shortly before the shooting, the rapper tweeted, “Having strong enemies is a blessing.” Hussle was “a devout member of the Rolling Sixty Crips,” a national street gang that was founded in Los Angeles in the mid-1970s.

The 33-year-old rapper opened The Marathon Clothing store, in partnership with Adam Andebrhan and Stephen Donelson back in 2017. In hopes of opening the first “smart store” for customers to purchase merch and preview exclusive content from the West Coast rapper via an app.

Nipsey Hussle was an American rapper and songwriter from Los Angeles, California. He was initially known for his numerous mixtapes, including Bullets Ain’t Got No Name series, The Marathon, The Marathon Continues and Crenshaw. Hiis debut studio album Victory Lap was released in February 2018, and was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards in 2019, but lost to Cardi B.

Many well known and respected celebrities reached out across all platforms of social media to express their feelings towards the tragedy including J Cole who tweeted:

Nipsey you a legend. I respect and admire your career path and what you did for the neighborhood. My heart broke today when I saw the news. I’m praying for your loved ones. This was supposed to be the year we got one in. God had bigger plans for you 🙏🏿

On Monday a petition was proposed two potential new names for the intersection of Crenshaw Blvd. and Slauson Ave., “Nipsey Hussle Blvd” and “Nipsey Hussle Way,” calling on Los Angeles City Council member Marqueece Harris-Dawson to make the change.

By Thursday morning, the petition had over 350,000 signatures, nearing its goal of 500,000. A Change.org petition to rename an intersection in South Los Angeles “Nipsey Hussle Blvd” after the slain rapper is going viral.
