Belvidere’s Co-Op boys volleyball team was looking to build off of a disappointing season last year. After only three wins, they are looking to keep building as a program. They got their first chance to do that as they opened with a home game against East, who finished one spot ahead of Belvidere last year. Belvidere won in three sets, they won the first set 25-21, lost the second set by two, and they won the last set 25-20.

After a great start to the season, Belvidere hosted Boylan, who was the defending conference champion. North was up seven in the first set, but Boylan made a comeback and ended up winning the first set 25-23. The next set was not as close, Belvidere was not able to keep up with Boylan’s scoring and they eventually lost 25-17.

Belvidere looked to bounce back from their loss as they traveled to Auburn. Auburn was a top-five team in the conference last year. Belvidere lost their first set 19-25, then they bounced back and won the second set 25-23. But they fell short in the final set as they lost 25-22. Belvidere has had a tough start to the season but they are looking to keep improving by the time the postseason starts.

After a tough start to the season, Belvidere has gained traction as they are now 7-7 overall and 4-7 in conference. Wins against IMSA, Guilford, Harlem, and East allowed Belvidere to break the .500 mark on the season. But two close losses to Hononegah have held Belvidere back from being at the top of the conference. Between the two games, Belvidere didn’t lose a set by more than five points. And their biggest loss in the season was by only seven to the top team in the conference, Boylan.

Belvidere has shown that they can play with anyone, they just need to be able to close out games.

“We have a good team and a lot of experienced guys, we just need to keep playing and eventually we will get in a flow and start stringing together some wins. We just need to be playing our best when the playoffs start. Our close losses have shown that we are able to play with anybody in the conference, but we need to find ways to win those tough games,” said Kyle Kaempfer (‘20).

They are hoping that their latest win against Guilford will push them into the postseason. The first round of games start on May 20th.
